Congressional Staffers Visits

Delegation Brief on Visit

Staffers Delegation January 18-25, 2003

AmCham Egypt board members and veteran DoorKnock delegates welcomed a visiting group of congressional staffers from Washington, DC for a special lunch and roundtable discussion on January 21 at the Cairo Marriott Hotel. Also in attendance were the head of the parliamentary economic committee, Said El Alfy, and the assistant minister of foreign affairs for North America, Reda Shehata.

The 10 staffers and two other congressional insiders, who were in the country at the invitation of AmCham Egypt, had the opportunity earlier in the week to meet with journalists from ++Al-Ahram Weekly++ for "an informal exchange of views on current issues," as the state-owned, English-language paper reported on January 23.

The staffers on the delegation are associated with Members of Congress who serve on the Senate and House committees considered critical for US-Egyptian relations. During their weeklong visit, they also met with high-ranking officials from several branches of the Egyptian state apparatus.
