  • Seven hundred business leaders and senior government officials celebrated AmCham Egypt’s 14th anniversary at a benefit dinner on May 14. The proceeds were donated to the AmCham Egypt Foundation
  • More than LE 5 million was raised at a fundraising dinner organized by the Chamber in conjunction with the Egyptian Red Crescent Society featuring Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak as guest of honor. The money was used for the establishment of blood-transfusion centers for children
  • An international two-day business conference was hosted by AmCham Egypt entitled "Egypt: The Emerging Market". The event was the nation’s first economic-policy conference organized by the Egyptian private sector, and was attended by around 1,000 participants
  • Another one-day conference, also titled "Egypt: The Emerging Market," was sponsored in Bahrain to increase cooperation, develop economic relations, and encourage direct and indirect investment in Egypt. The event was addressed by members of the Egyptian cabinet, Bahraini government officials, as well as prominent business representatives. Recent economic developments and investment incentives were covered during the sessions
  • AmCham Egypt held a workshop in Cairo on December 1 entitled "Challenges Facing the Insurance Sector in Egypt". Minister of Economy Youssef Boutros-Ghali stated that the Egyptian government was moving towards the deregulation of the insurance sector
  • The Business Information Highway project (BIH) was instituted to develop and deploy an Internet-based communications network to connect AmCham and other business organizations to the global market
  • The Business Studies & Analysis Center was established to provide investors with comprehensive economic reports and sector studies on Egypt
  • The AmCham Egypt television show "The Indicator" was launched to build public awareness of Egypt’s fast-paced economic reform

  • The 40-member delegation conveyed the message that after years of aggressive reform and careful, managed growth, Egypt has earned its place in the top rank of the world’s emerging markets
  • The Chamber hosted an outstandingly successful roundtable discussion with American policy experts entitled "A Vision for the Middle East into the 21st Century"
  • Aside from the traditional meetings with policymakers, AmCham organized a well-attended reception at the Metropolitan Club, and a luncheon at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce featuring Chairman of the Egyptian Stock Exchange Sherif Raafat as guest speaker
  • In conjunction with the DoorKnock, AmCham conducted business missions to the state of North Carolina and to the city of New York. In the latter, the delegation met with major financial institutions. In addition, the Bank of New York and Chase Manhattan Bank hosted special luncheon events on the occasion of the visit

  • The 15th annual celebration held on June 9 brought in LE 400,000 for the AmCham Egypt Foundation. Around 900 business leaders and government officials attended the seated dinner at the Katameya Heights resort
  • Former U.S. president George Bush was the guest speaker at a fundraising dinner organized by AmCham Egypt for the Future Foundation. The dinner raised a total of LE 5.5 million to provide affordable housing for Egypt’s low-income citizens
  • AmCham Egypt also organized a gala dinner attended by Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, president of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, to support the integrated social development of the Greater Cairo community of Zeinhom
  • AmCham Egypt, the Dubai World Trade Center, the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies and the Federation of Egyptian Industries organized a two-day conference, "Egypt: The Emerging Market," in Dubai. Under the patronage of the prime minister of Egypt and the crown prince of Dubai, the event launched a one-week exhibition of Egyptian products and highlighted Egypt as the gateway to the region
  • The Chamber also held a one-day workshop in Cairo entitled "Investment Opportunities in Egypt." The objective of the event was to promote the activities of 14 companies the government had decided to offer to strategic investors
  • To further enhance the government’s efforts to move towards the deregulation and expansion of the maritime sector, AmCham Egypt sponsored a workshop entitled "Egypt: From Comparative Advantage to Competitive Advantage in the Transshipment and Maritime Industries" under the auspices of the minister of transport

  • This year marked the 16th annual AmCham Egypt mission to the United States. It emphasized Egypt’s importance as a strategic partner with the strength to transform the relationship from one of assistance to one of solid alliance
  • The Washington schedule included 161 meetings with policymakers and business associations
  • The highlight of the visit was the extremely successful luncheon at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, with two keynote speakers: Minister of Education Hussein Bahaa El Din and Minister of State for Environmental Affairs Nadia Makram Ebeid
  • The Chamber sponsored a roundtable discussion, "Egypt’s Strategic Role in a Changing Middle East," with representatives from policy think-tanks as well as the academic community
  • Business missions visited New York City; Atlanta, Georgia; and Pennsylvania

Special Events

  • AmCham organized the "U.S. Support for Trade and Investment" conference on May 25-26 featuring three key U.S. organizations: the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., and the U.S. Trade Development Agency
  • A seminar titled "E-commerce and Banking: Strategic Directions" was held to promote e-commerce in Egypt and addressed by prominent speakers

Milestones

  • On May 4, 1999, AmCham Egypt inaugurated its new headquarters, a 10-story building uniting all of AmCham Egypt’s activities under one roof. The new facility, fully equipped with cutting-edge information technology, also provides space for meetings, training and media production, thus serving Egypt’s business community
