INSIDE AMCHAM

Since one of AmCham’s primary roles is to provide information about the various sectors of the Egyptian economy, the chamber’s Business Studies & Analysis Center (BSAC) publishes several research reports each year to provide members of the business community here and abroad with facts and data to deepen their understanding of the sector.

Obtaining data in Egypt has traditionally been a challenge. Not only are companies nervous about making their due diligence public, the upkeep of sector-by-sector data has been weak. It has thus become one of the main aims of the BSAC team to collect data and information about the different sectors from various sources and compile them in one document to create a knowledge-base for readers. Moreover, the chamber’s team of highly qualified economists also provides analysis for this data in order to place it in perspective.

The focus on one specific sector over another is determined based on a variety of factors. For one, sectors that experience serious changes or activity often become prime candidates for a full report. Another factor is major interest from the business community in a specific sector. Moreover, if a particular sector is perceived as attractive to foreign investors, then a full report is published to provide insight into that sector. Earlier this year, the BSAC team published a full analysis of the tourism sector. A second report, focusing on the banking sector, will be available by the end of the month. A report on the oil and gas sector is also in the works and should be available by the end of the year.

What makes BSAC reports stand out is the fact that they are built on a combination of data gathered from a variety of government and private institutions along with in-depth interviews with major players in the sector and in-house analysis. Moreover, BSAC has been preparing in-depth analyses for the various sectors in Egypt for more than a decade, which allows it to benchmark the changes that have unfolded in each sector.

Other than publishing reports, the BSAC team also prepares a variety of studies that provide information to our members. For example, the team publishes annual country profiles of Egypt and the US, complete with overviews of the changes within the business environments in both countries and their impact on economics. And, of course, the profiles are stocked with information. There are also periodic how-to guides published by the team. For example, later this year, BSAC will be publishing a guide on how to export to the United States. This guide will also contain in-depth analysis of the textiles and furniture sectors, the highest exporters to the US from Egypt.

A complimentary copy of each report published by BSAC is available to principal members. The reports can also be purchased by members of the business community.
