Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote trade and investment between Egypt and the United States.

Activities

The American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (AmCham Egypt) represents Egyptian companies with business interests in the United States and American and multinational companies doing business in Egypt. The Chamber pursues its mission and represents its members’ interests under the guidance of an active board of governors and through the work of sector-oriented committees.

The Chamber provides a forum for members to identify and discuss challenges facing private businesses and presents the views of the business community to the Egyptian and US governments. AmCham Egypt convenes frequent meetings between its membership and key Egyptian and American policymakers and business leaders.

The organization’s awareness and advocacy functions are enhanced by its website (www.amcham.org.eg) and its range of high-quality printed publications. In addition, AmCham Egypt actively works to put businesses in contact with each other and offers specialized business services, both to its members and through member companies.

History

President Hosni Mubarak formally authorized the establishment of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt in October 1981. AmCham Egypt was the first American chamber of commerce in the Middle East and it has remained one of the most effective, growing from a relatively informal group of around 200 members into one of the country’s most important non-profit organizations, with around 1,300 members.

Until the late 1990s, operations were directed from an office in the Cairo Marriott Hotel, with some departments being located in other parts of the city. As the range of the Chamber’s activities grew, the need for space increased. In 1999, with financial assistance from the United States, AmCham Egypt united all its operations and services in a single, permanent headquarters in the central Cairo district of Dokki.

In addition, AmCham Egypt has nurtured ongoing contact with government bodies and business organizations in the United States. At times when US-Egyptian relations have been strained by regional events, AmCham Egypt has consistently advocated peace, dialogue, investment and trade.
