Egypt-U.S. Trade
The United States is Egypt’s largest single trade partner with a volume of trade reaching $7.7 billion in 2007, 6% of Egypt’s GDP. U.S. exports to Egypt are the fourth largest in the MENA region representing 10% of the total region, while U.S. imports from Egypt are 2.3% of the region’s total.

Egypt’s annual petroleum exports since 2005 have been around one billion dollars, more than triple their 2004 value, due to the surge in gas exports. The most important non-petroleum exports in 2007 were clothing, fertilizers, and carpets. The most important imports in 2007 were wheat, corn, aircrafts, and machinery parts.

Under the U.S. GSP program, only 3% of Egypt’s total exports to the U.S. were eligible for duty-free entry in 2007. This ranked Egypt the 23rd among countries benefiting from the GSP program. Products exported under GSP include aluminium, other non-metallic mineral products, fruit and vegetables preserves, beverages, glassware, and plastic products. The limited benefit from the program is mainly due to Egypt’s specific trade structure, where approximately 83% of exports are textile, apparel and petroleum products not eligible for GSP treatment.
